Help Clean Up Long Valley's Koehler's Pond On Sunday

LONG VALLEY, NJ — Helping hands are needed in Long Valley this coming Sunday to remove invasive Water Chestnuts - an aquatic plant - in Koehler's Pond. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will help with wading in shallow areas of the pond or if they have boats - with rowboats preferred over canoes and kayaks - will be delegated to help in deeper sections of the pond. Volunteers in boats must have life jackets on to participate and are asked to bring rakes. People who can help closer to the shore with Water Chestnut removal are being asked to wear waders. According to Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the Water Chestnut is a floating herb classified as an "Aquatic Nuisance Species," which can threaten a water's ecosystem, cause health problems to humans and animals, make it difficult to navigate a water body and can be costly to remove if it multiplies.
