Former Spartan Keith Appling Faces Charges In 2nd Shooting Case

JACKSON, MI — A former Michigan State basketball player who is charged in the shooting death of a Detroit man also is facing charges in connection with another shooting in another Michigan county, according to media reports Tuesday. Keith Appling, 29, is charged with intent to do bodily harm and felony firearm in connection with a May 2 shooting at his girlfriend's Jackson home, The Detroit News reported Tuesday, citing Jackson County prosecutors. Appling, prosecutors told The Detroit News, is accused of shooting at a man at his girlfriend's home. The man was not shot, according to the report. "The defendant came out and began firing at the victim," Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka told The Detroit News. "The victim got in his car and left the scene. His vehicle sustained bullet holes." Natalie Bannister, Appling's girlfriend, also has been charged in the case. She faces charges of accessory after the fact and lying to a peace officer. Appling is accused of killing 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds, a relative. Detroit police identified Appling as a suspect in the shooting, which unfolded in the 13200 block of Whitcomb Street on May 22. Police at the time said Appling and Edmonds had a "verbal altercation" over a handgun that turned physical before Edmonds was shot multiple times. Appling fled the area near Schoolcraft and Greenfield Road a newer model tan Buick Regal, police said later. He was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on May 24 without incident in the 1500 block of Commerce Park Drive in Chelsea. A firearm was recovered during the arrest, police said in a news release. Prosecutors accused Bannister of driving Appling from the scene and lying to police investigating the case.
