Description

3 Day Canyoneering Swift Water Training with Joe Storms!!!. Storms has 20+ years professional guide experience in the Canadian Rockies. This training is a layered progression. Understanding risk, complexity of objectives (use of tools and techniques) and transition through environments (verticality and hydrology). Moving from low risk horizontal to high risk vertical situations. Day 1- horizontal water crossings and travel, reading aquatic environments and foundational techniques. Day2- interaction of rope systems with aquatic environments, more techniques and self discovery. Day 3- vertical environments and application of rope techniques. Overall program goal is temet nosce (know thyself). Several exercises involve performing acts that test one’s faculties. The true goal is to provide some experience and increased awareness of the dynamic and powerful nature of moving water. The kit that each participant should have includes : 1- core technical canyon personal equipment (helmet, whistle, harness, rappel device, footwear) Every participant is required to bring her own personal protective equipment. These core items will be evaluated and if they are deficient in terms of safety, they will not be permitted. 1.1- core safety equipment (knife, PFD) I have intentionally isolated these two items from the other list as I believe they require some consideration. First, bring what you have. If you don’t have one then it may be better to wait to purchase it after the training as there are several details that may affect your decision on what model/ style you choose. A suggested knife is the CRKT bear claw, a suggested PFD is the Mustang survival rescue swimmer. 2- aquatic protective equipment (wetsuit/dry suit, insulating layers, thermal hood, neoprene socks, gloves) What exactly to bring is largely dependent upon weather, water temperature and ones’ body tolerance to continued exposure in water. If you are susceptible to chills then consider fleece layer and shell overtop a wetsuit or a drysuit. 3- technical canyon equipment (ascending device/ system, tether, 4 locking carabiners, one- 5m cordelette, one- 5m webbing, pulley, VT Prussik, Not critical but beneficial. These items offer the ability to work on additional techniques. They essentially supplement the group gear that will be used during the program.
