KENNESAW, GA — A golf pro at the Pinetree Country Club near Kennesaw State University was shot and killed while on the course Saturday afternoon, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and others have reported. The state's top golf organizations have identified the victim as Gene Siller.
"He was a great boss and an even better man," a country club employee told The Journal-Constitution. Siller was 45, according to his player profile on BlueGolf.com.
The gunman's truck got stuck near the course's 18th green just before 3 p.m. after he drove there from the bordering neighborhood, and the golf pro was shot when he went onto the course to investigate, witnesses told The Journal-Constitution.
Another witness told WXIA five gunshots were heard in a row.
"Then nothing went on, and immediately members reacting like 'I think there might be gunshots' and then apparently somebody was down on the ground," the witness said. "Then it was kind of like a frenzy, everyone was trying to figure out what was going on."
The shooter, a man described by Kennesaw State Emergency Management officials on Twitter as 6-foot-1 with long hair, fled and hadn't been caught as of early Sunday morning.
Kennesaw State officials originally said the man was "armed and dangerous," on Club Drive headed toward Shiloh Road. Later, officials said there was "no credible threat," as regular activities at the university resumed.
