Press release from City of Berkeley: July 1, 2021 Berkeley, California - Join us July 10 as we kick off the once-a-decade process of redrawing Berkeley's City Council district boundaries at the first public hearing of the Independent Redistricting Commission - a body charged with creating a new district map that ensures fair and equal representation for all using factors such as population data, geography, demographics, and direct testimony from community members. The Commission, which is overseeing the redistricting process for the first time this year, was created by voters in 2016 in an effort to have the City's eight districts shaped independently of the elected officials who will serve in them. Online public hearing July 10 The July 10 hearing is the first of many opportunities to participate in the redistricting process. At the event, you'll meet the Independent Redistricting Commission, a group of 13 Berkeley residents chosen through an open and transparent application and selection process to administer the redrawing of Council districts following the 2020 Census.
