Grandfather searching for small/medium dog

My grandfather is looking for a little companion to keep him company. He prefers small/medium size dog,male or female doesn’t matter and she doesn’t matter. Probably best if it’s low or medium energy,but one that enjoys walks would be ok to as he likes to walk around town a lot. He currently has no other pets. Must be house trained though and must love kids as I bring my kids to visit him often so he wants a dog that will play with them or at least sit on the couch with them and enjoy some pets lol. He is on a fixed income so preferably low or no rehome fee. I will help him with flea medication,rabies shots,or any vet needs that may arise,I would be the one driving him to the vet or anywhere anyway as he doesn’t drive.
