The program concludes with two movements of Antonin Dvorak’s String Quartet #12, “The American.” Dvorak uses the bird song, spirituals and folksongs of small-town Iowa in the 1890’s as melodic inspiration for this joyful, energetic work. Orange County Arts Council’s music committee, composed of professional musicians throughout the region, have developed a creative solution to support musicians. O.C. Now hybrid, audiences can attend in person or tune in to Orange County Arts Council’s Social media to listen to local musicians. Vivace ma non Troppo PROGRAM NOTES Smetana – a Bohemian composer, considered the father of Czech music, pioneered the development of a nationalistic musical style. Smetana wrote the autobiographical string quartet "From My Life" in 1876 while completely deaf. Smetana described it as “intimately written for four instruments, as though in a small friendly circle they are discussing my joys and troubles among themselves”. At the premier, the viola part was played by a young Dvořák. The opening depicts Smetana's youth and “inclination to art and romanticism, and an unspeakable yearning for something I could not yet express or imagine”. The 2nd movement reflects a happy time when he was a composer of dance music, with the slower middle section being a portrait of Prague's aristocratic circle. The ardent, lyrical 3rd movement “brings to mind the bliss of my first love for the girl who later became my faithful wife.” The finale opens with a vigorous and joyful dance, representing “the beauty of national music, and the happiness resulting from it.” Unfortunately, it is abruptly cut off by a high whistling omen which signals the beginning of his deafness. “It is that fateful whistling of the highest tones in my ear, which in 1874 was announcing my deafness.” Krása – a Czechoslovakian composer who studied with Zemlinsky at the Music Academy in Prague. Influences included Schoenberg, Ravel, and Stravinsky. His Symphony was performed by Koussevitzky in Boston, and his opera Verlobung im Traum (Betrothed in a Dream) conducted in Prague by Szell. His best-known work was a children's opera Brundibár (Bumblebee) in a light folk style. He wrote this quartet in 1936, influenced by his work in the theater. Krása could not escape Prague during the Nazi occupation, he was deported to Terezín in 1942 and was killed in Auschwitz. Dvořák – a Bohemian composer, inspired by his predecessor Smetana, Dvořák frequently included folk tunes in his music. While visiting the US in 1893 he wrote the American Quartet, along with Symphony from the New World. The 3rd movement features birdcalls, including a persistent Red-Eyed Vireo. The 4th movement opens with an adaptation of Native American drumming, and the slower section introduces a chorale derived from a church hymn. Where is Bohemia? Bohemia was originally a kingdom of Great Moravia (833), then part of the Holy Roman Empire (1002), and then the Austrian Empire (1526). It became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918, and then Czech Republic in 1993. Bohemians were known for their wide-ranging musical, artistic, literary, and spiritual pursuits.
