Description

Saturday, October 2, 2021, 4-10 PM 325 North Street, Winooski, VT, 05404 Jean Dickson Cherouny grew up in Connecticut, where at an early age she became both an artist and an athlete. After high school at the Burke Mountain ski academy in Vermont, she entered the University of Vermont to study art education and to race for its NCAA Division I alpine ski team. After graduating magna cum laude, she went on to study landscape painting at Vermont Studio Center and earn an MFA from Johnson State College. Her work has been shown in galleries and exhibitions in New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Texas, and the Czech Republic, and is part of many private collections. Throughout her artistic career, Cherouny’s work has been infused with the speed, energy and motion of racing sports. Her senior exhibition at UVM was a series of paintings of futuristic abstract bike racers with bold lines and gestures dashed with bursts of color. Her MFA thesis show at JSC featured paint applied not by brush but with rollerblades worn by the artist, who skated repeatedly across the canvas. She says, “I use the right tools to convey energetic lines and color onto its surface.” Cherouny considers herself a latter-day abstract expressionist, taking inspiration from the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and Rebecca Purdum. Recently her work has featured the use of reclaimed, rustic and natural materials including cardboard, wooden shingles and moss.
