Memory House Altars Ceramic Tile During the two-part hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to ceramic hand building construction techniques while creating their own version of a clay wall relief Memory House tile. Your inspirations may include memories of your past, present and future community experiences living in Charlotte or other communities. Designs may comprise of a portrait(s), patterns, and or objects that have sentimental value. The tiles will be fired which will result a beautiful tile to be displayed and used in your home or office. No prior experience in clay or art required. Saturday, July 10, 2021 During the first workshop session, participants will craft and build their Memory House tiles. After the tiles have completely dried, the workshop instructors will fire the tiles in a kiln and will return to the Gantt Center in preparation for the second session. Saturday, July 17, 2021 During the second session, participants will paint and glaze their pieces in preparation for displaying the finished pieces in a special place at home or in an office. This is a two-part workshop. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions in order to complete your ceramic tiles. The workshop fee covers both sessions. Workshop Instructors: Lydia Thompson is a Professor of Ceramics at UNC Charlotte and her work has been included in galleries, art centers, and museums such as the Society for Contemporary Crafts, Pennsylvania; Baltimore Clayworks; the Ohr O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi; the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft; Te Temauta Gallery in New Zealand, and Guldagergaard in Denmark. She has taught workshops at centers throughout the country. In 2019, Thompson worked with Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, in partnership with The Union for Contemporary Art Girls Inc. Summer Program and hosted a weeklong workshop. Danielle Carelock is a visual artist and maintains a studio in Charlotte, NC. She has taught workshops at Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Clayworks, UNC Greensboro, and Smart Girls of Guilford County. Her work has been included the Greenhill Center for the NC Art, Juried Mistletoe Market Vintage, Center for Visual Artists and the Cornelius Arts Center. The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is a multi-disciplinary arts institution in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1974 and named for Charlotte civic leader and former mayor Harvey Bernard Gantt, the Gantt Center’s mission is to present, preserve and celebrate excellence in the art, history and culture of African-Americans and those of African descent. Designed by Philip Freelon, co-designer of the new Smithsonian National Museum for African American Art and Culture, the Gantt Center features fine art exhibits from around the world.
