Description
CORAM, NY — A Suffolk County police officer was injured responding to a blaze in Coram on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman said.
Police received a 911 call about smoke emanating from the garage of a Groton Lane home at about 4 p.m., and officers from the 6th Precinct who responded noted the home was "engulfed in flames," at one point, as firefighters were extinguishing the flames, he said.
An officer was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson for treatment of smoke inhalation, police said.
The fire was one of two fires that broke out minutes apart, but in neighboring hamlets, keeping firefighters in Coram and Terryville busy.
A second call came in for another fire at a two-story townhouse on Sara Drive in Terryville at 4:08 p.m., police said. No one was injured in the fire.
Both fires appear to be non-criminal in nature, a police spokesman said.
