Description

Join us at our first in-person event on what we can do to boost Black and Brown representation in skilled trades and labor unions! Did you know that for all skilled-worker hours completed for city construction projects, only 9% were completed by Black men, 8% by Latino men, and 1% by Native American men, Asian men and all women combined (Philadelphia Citizen, 2018). BIPOC workers are drastically underrepresented in the higher-paying construction jobs in Philadelphia. The West Philadelphia Promise Zone's Workforce and Economic Opportunity Committee is holding an in-person conversation centered around Black and Brown talent in the construction trades and connecting industries to opportunity. Light refreshments will be provided. Panel is still forming, but confirmed panelists include: Lark Jackson, Women in TradesMaurice Harris, Mantua Resident and JourneymanModerated by: Soneyet Muhammad, Drexel UniversityEvent space is GBAC STAR accredited. Masks not required for vaccinated attendees. The West Philadelphia Promise Zone aims to reduce poverty and bring greater opportunity to people living and working in West Philadelphia. The Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity coordinates organizations to connect residents to high quality education, well-paying jobs, affordable housing, health services, and safe and healthy places to live. This federally designated area is roughly two square miles - bounded by the Schuylkill River to the east, Girard Avenue to the north, 48th Street to the west, and Sansom Street to the south.
