Fireworks Illegal In Prince George's; Leaders Suggest Alternative

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Officials on Friday reminded residents that all consumer fireworks are illegal in Prince George's County. This ban includes sparklers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and more. "Every year around the Fourth of July, we see an uptick in the detonation of fireworks across the County," stated Tiffany Green, chief of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department. "Fireworks, including sparklers, can cause serious bodily harm like burns, injuries to extremities and more." Green explained that the law is designed to protect Prince Georgians. "All too often, the group who suffers the majority of these injuries are children," she continued. "There is also the chance that you could accidentally start a fire." The chief encouraged residents to turn in their fireworks without penalty. Locals can dispose of their materials through the Fireworks Amnesty Program by calling (301) 583-2200. Prince Georgians can also report illegal use of fireworks by dialing (301) 352-1200. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks asked residents to attend one of these sanctioned, professional displays: Saturday, July 3: City of Laurel, 8300 Mulberry Street Saturday, July 3: Six Flags America, 13710 Central Avenue. The National Harbor will not have a fireworks show. "We know Prince Georgians are excited to celebrate July 4th, particularly this year," Alsobrooks said in a press release. "We want our residents to have fun and be safe and that is why we are encouraging residents to take advantage of the public fireworks displays that will be hosted throughout the county this weekend."
