PITTSBURGH, PA — Just hours after city police announced a safety initiative for the South Side, a man was shot and critically wounded there early Friday. The shooting occurred at about 12:30 a.m.
Police responding to a SpotShooter alert at South 10th and Bigham Street noticed a car driving erratically. They followed the vehicle to a nearby hospital, where they discovered the shooting victim.
The man has not been identified.
Police believe the shooting occurred at the intersection of South 12th and Muriel streets.
The South Side has seen an increasing number of fights, pedestrians struck by vehicles and incidents of gun violence as people have flock to the neighborhood's many bars and restaurants since coronavirus mitigation measures were lifted. That prompted city officials on Thursday to announce a new safety effort there, particularly along East Carson Street where the bulk of the disturbances have occurred.
