Drunk Boating Patrols Coming To Lake Quinsigamond July 4 Weekend

WORCESTER, MA — If you're planning to drive a boat around Lake Quinsigamond this weekend, police want you to stay dry. Over July 4 weekend, local police and Massachusetts Environmental Police will be out on the lake as part of "operation dry water" looking for drunk boaters. The campaign is aimed at preventing drunk boating injuries and deaths. Police will be trying to stop drunk boaters, but also educating boat operators about proper water safety — like operating at headway speed within 150 feet of a swimmer or docked boats. "The Fourth of July offers an excellent time for us all to get outside, enjoy the water with friends and family, and celebrate the holiday; however, we all must remain responsible while boating to ensure the operator, passengers, and those around us enjoy a safe experience," Massachusetts Environmental Police Colonel Shaun Santos said in a news release. Police from Shrewsbury and Worcester, plus Worcester firefighters and the state Department of Fish and Game, will be participating in operation dry water. The stepped up enforcement will span July 2 to July 4.
