Description

Batten down the hatches - pirates are coming to the Hempsted Houses! Join us on Saturday, August 7th from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, August 8th from 9 am to 3 pm, for a weekend of all things pirate. Learn about seafarers of the past, and the Hempsted family connections to pirates and privateers that once sailed the Sound and strolled the streets of New London. Meet members of The Crew of the Raven, local pirates who will share with you their stories, show off their gear, and perform firing demonstrations throughout the day [yes?]. Put your pirate skills to the test with a scavenger hunt around the Hempsted grounds, and purchase some plundered colonial items from Big Bear Trading Company. Learn about the Hempsted family that witnessed all the salty characters and tales of New London’s maritime past. Admission is FREE, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. The event is supported in part by: the Frank Loomis Palmer Fund, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee; the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut; and the Chelsea Groton Foundation, Inc. Registration is recommended. Heavy rain postpones the event to Saturday and Sunday, August 14th and 15th. In order to protect the health of our staff, visitors, and community, all visitors are encouraged to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines. The historic house museum interior will remain closed to the public during the Pirate Day event. Connecticut Landmarks uses historic properties to inspire an understanding of our complex past. Founded in 1936 as the Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, we are a state-wide network of ten significant historic properties that span four centuries of New England history. Our real-life stories, as told through our collections, make history matter. For more information, please visit www.ctlandmarks.org.
