The W.O.W. Project’s 5th artist-in-residence, Joy Mao, invites the community to an intimate gathering around her 百家衣 Bai Jia Yi The W.O.W. Project’s 5th artist-in-residence, Joy Mao, invites the community to an intimate gathering around her 百家衣 Bai Jia Yi (“Hundred Families Robe”) — a quilted robe made from fabric remnants donated by Chinatown’s community of past and present garment workers. Joy’s Bai Jia Yi seeks to connect and preserve these important stories from Chinatown’s garment-making history, in order to understand how our shared past can help steward our collective futures. Joy and her collaborators will share in a short live streamed conversation about their time working together, as well as their intergenerational experiences in New York’s garment industry from 5-6pm. To follow, we will invite the public to join us in celebrating Joy's residency and admire her Bai Jia Yi project in the Wing on Wo storefront from 6:30pm-8:30pm in 30 minute time ticketed intervals. All of our programming is made possible by W.O.W team members and volunteers, and we welcome and appreciate any donations to help sustain our future. If you enjoy our programming, please consider donating to our 5 Year Anniversary fundraiser. All of our in-person events and programs will follow NY’s social distancing guidelines and will take place outside as much as possible. For more information on our Covid-19 safety procedures, or to learn more about our fundraiser, please visit our website:https://www.wowprojectnyc.org ABOUT JOY MAO Joy Mao (@byjoymao) is a Chinese American fashion designer investigating how clothing and craft can cultivate a sense of belonging. She creates small batches of thoughtfully-made clothing, accessories, and artwork for the joy mao brand. During the 5th 店面 Storefront Residency, Joy will create a 百家衣 Bai Jia Yi (“Hundred Families Robe”) in collaboration with the Chinatown community. She will invite the community to donate scraps of fabric, garments, or even small objects—which she will then assemble into a very special 百家衣 Bai Jia Yi to display in the Wing on Wo storefront window. By transforming the donated items into this one garment, she wishes to create a physical record of the community’s collective effort—to participate in a shared moment of reflection, and to co-create something which embodies the community’s hopes for the future. *Note: We will be following strict COVID precautions, requiring masks and social distancing at all times in our storefront space. Stay tuned for timed tickets to be released on July 1st. Wing on Wo. & Co is the oldest store in Chinatown, New York bringing you the best quality porcelain ware since 1925.
