WAUWATOSA, WI — A construction company hired by the city started renovations at a Wauwatosa elementary school. VJS Construction Services started work on Roosevelt Elementary School, 2535 N. 73rd St. Construction started on June 21 and is expected to end in November, the Wauwatosa School District announced. Contractors will work from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., it added. The following upgrades will be made to the school. New drop-off lane at the 74th Street entrance.New concrete sidewalks and asphalt paving throughout.New site fencing throughout.Newly seeded field and baseball diamond on the north side.New playground area and equipment with a synthetic turf base.New basketball courts and hoops.New play area for hopscotch and four square.Landscaping — new trees, shrubs, planting and seeding throughout.Landscaping — new butterfly garden on the south side. The project is a result of a 2018 referendum to replace four elementary schools and improve other district schools, the district said. Voters approved $124.9 million for upgrades to school facilities. Some $93.5 million will fund the construction of four new elementary schools: McKinley, Underwood, Wilson and Lincoln Elementary, the district said. Three out of four schools are more than 90 years old. Two of the schools had to be completely rebuilt. All of the projects will be completed by the start of the fall school year, according to a plan released by VJS.
