2 Ohio Companies Announce Layoffs, Furloughs In June

AVON LAKE, OH — Two Ohio companies announced mass layoffs and plant closings in June, according to filings with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. ILSCO is closing its Glenmoor Facility in Harrison and laying off 25 employees, the company said in its filing with the state. Layoffs will begin in early September and every employee at the plant will be impacted by the closure. Additionally, GenOn will close its Avon Lake Generating Station and layoff 50 employees. The plant is expected to close on approximately Sept. 15, 2021, according to the company's filing with the state. City officials in Avon Lake vowed to work with Ohio Means Jobs Lorain County to aid laid off workers in finding new employment. The power plant site will be turned into a publicly accessible lakefront property, city officials added. GenOn in Avon Lake — 50 employeesILSCO in Harrison — 25 employees Ohio's unemployment rate rose slightly in May, to 5 percent from 4.7 percent in April. That means nearly 278,000 Ohio residents are currently unemployed, the Cincinnati Enquirer noted. Unemployed Ohioans are also losing out on the extra $300 provided by federal unemployment assistance after Gov. Mike DeWine opted out of the program in May.
