In 1898, May Co. bought Hall & Dutton and in 1919 Higbee’s moved from East 12th Street to Public Square, setting the stage for eight department stores on Euclid Avenue. By the 1920s there were two hubs, Lower Euclid, and Upper Euclid (also known as the Theatre District) in place. The grand buildings set the stage for the adaptive re-use we see today.
