Description

Museum staff and BM Fire Department members will discuss the history and use of Black Mountain's historic firehouse. This year marks the centennial of the construction of the historic Black Mountain fire house, located in downtown Black Mountain on West State Street. The fire house was constructed two years after Black Mountain’s first fire department was officially formed, prompted in part by a devastating fire that struck the downtown area in 1912. The fire house was occupied for 63 years before the fire department transferred to a new building, and today the Swannanoa Valley Museum occupies this storied space. In this presentation, museum staff and BM Fire Department representatives will talk about the history of the department and the use of the building over time. This event will take place in person, at the Education Room of the Black Mountain Public Library at 105 N Dougherty Street, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Please register ahead of time to attend. Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center has served the western North Carolina community since 1989 as Buncombe County’s primary museum of general, local history.
