NEW BERLIN, WI — The New Berlin police officer who shot a man that authorities said was armed has been identified. The DOJ issued a statement Wednesday that identified New Berlin police officer Rick Helm, 44, as the officer involved in the shooting. The person who was shot is a 57-year-old New Berlin man. He is still in critical condition at a hospital, police said in a separate statement. An investigation confirmed that the person who called 911 was also the armed person, DOJ officials said. Helm has worked at the New Berlin Police Department for 20 years. He remains on paid administrative leave under department policy, police said. Around 10 p.m. June 22, dispatch received a call about a person with a gun in the 4000 block of South Moorland Road. New Berlin police officers responded and confronted the person, the DOJ said. At some point, an officer fired their gun and struck the person, who is in critical condition at the hospital, DOJ officials said. The investigation is being led by the DOJ's criminal investigative division, whose final report will be turned over to the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office. A New Berlin police spokesperson told Patch there are no photos of the incident and that the department does not have body cameras or dash cameras.
