CHELMSFORD, MA — Nearly 2,000 in town lost power as powerful winds tore across the state Wednesday evening into Wednesday night. National Grid estimated that power would be restored by 7:15 p.m., but then pushed that back to around 10 p.m. according to its website. At 8:30 p.m. more than 21,000 power customers in the commonwealth were without power, as thunderstorms rolled through. Chelmsford and Westford were among the hardest hit communities, according to a Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency map. The number of those without power across the commonwealth rose as a second storm rolled through. By 8:30 p.m. temperatures had mercifully dropped into the 70s, after a day of record highs across the state in the 90s.
