WOODBRIDGE, VA — When people drive up to Bank of America's automated teller machine on Route 1 in Woodbridge, they can thank the sun for dispensing cash or depositing their checks. The drive-up ATM, at 14527 Jefferson Davis Highway, is the first remote ATM in the nation powered by solar power. It is also the first of three solar-powered stand-alone ATMs that Bank of America plans to bring online in 2020. Bank of America's goal, as part of its Onsite Solar Initiative, is to incorporate solar power into the design standards for new remote ATMs. The bank also plans to install more than 60 solar panel installations across its entire operations, including financial centers, ATMs, office locations and other operational buildings. Bank of America brought the solar-powered ATM in Woodbridge online in September. Nationwide, solar installations are already operational in more than eight Bank of America's financial centers and office locations. The bank's Onsite Solar Initiative is expected to generate more than 25 megawatts from renewable energy to directly power the bank's operations. These actions are moving Bank of America closer to its broader environmental commitments, the bank said. The financial institution also is working to reduce water usage and bring more electric vehicle charging stations to financial centers and work facilities.
