COLUMBIA, MD —Earlier this month, Howard Community College broke ground on a new complex that will house the school's mathematics department and many of its athletics facilities. Construction on the 193,000-square-foot complex is expected to begin later this summer, according to the school. The Mathematics and Athletics Complex, the current name of the project, is expected to cost $101.7 million and will be a capital project funded by Howard County and the state of Maryland, the school said in a release. The four-story complex will be situated on the site of the current athletics and fitness center. "It is a momentous day, as we prepare to build a new future for the college, one that brings together academics and athletics," Felícita Solá-Carter, chair of the Howard Community College Board of Trustees, said at the June 16 groundbreaking ceremony, which featured representatives from the school and local elected officials. The mathematics department currently is housed in a former office building, while the existing athletics and fitness center was built in 1969, and is in need of replacement. The Mathematics and Athletics Complex is expected to have a math learning center, class labs, study lounge, marker space and a research area. The athletics portion of the building will house a competition gym, multipurpose gym, locker rooms, a classroom, fitness center and a strength and conditioning room. "Today marks a major turning point for innovation, hope and revitalization for our entire community," said Calvin Ball, Howard County executive "This space will provide a home for both mental and physical exercise, a place to break down barriers and provide opportunity for the future. We were proud to invest in a place where learners of all ages have the resources to thrive." The architectural firm Ayers Saint Gross will design the new building, while Gilbane Building Company will manage its construction. Howard Community College also said it anticipates the new structure will receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification because of its green roof and outdoor spaces.
