DORCHESTER COUNTY, MD — Police said a medevac helicopter on June 18 hoisted a patient from a cargo ship in the Chesapeake Bay. Officers noted that the emergency chopper took the patient to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, a hospital in Salisbury. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command added that it dispatched the helicopter around 5:30 a.m. The United States Coast Guard, Sector Baltimore got the initial call and requested the help of the Trooper 6 chopper, an incident report explained. The write-up informed that the helicopter flew out to the 750-foot ship, called the Laurence Francoise, which was passing Cove Point in the bay. The AW-139 chopper hovered 50 feet above the vessel while the rescue technician descended and retrieved the patient, the press release stated. Police did not mention why the patient needed treatment.
