SAN RAFAEL, CA — A Marin County man died from injuries he suffered Friday afternoon in a motorized scooter collision involving a deer, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The man was identified as Melvin "Scott" Lockard, 64 of Kentfield.
Lockard at around 4:30 p.m. was riding his Vespa scooter eastbound on Lucas Valley Road near Jerry Russom Memorial Park at Sequeira Road when a deer broadsided him, the Sheriff's Office said.
The force of the collision ejected Lockard to the roadway shoulder, leaving him unconscious and unresponsive according to the Sheriff's Office.
Emergency personnel responding to a 9-1-1 call determined Lockard to be experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest, the Sheriff's Office said.
"Despite providing extensive resuscitative efforts (Lockard) failed to respond, and his death was pronounced on the scene," the Sheriff's Office said.
A forensic postmortem examination with toxicology testing is scheduled for later this week, the Sheriff's Office said.
"The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the California Highway Patrol, Marin Office and the Marin County Sheriff's Office - Coroner Division," the Sheriff's Office said.
"No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation."
