Press release from the City of Plymouth: 06/29/2021 4:35 pm As Independence Day nears, the Plymouth Fire Department reminds residents to take extra precautions and practice good judgment when celebrating with fireworks. Without proper care, fireworks can quickly result in serious injury and costly property damage. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety: There is an average of 75 hospital visits each year in Minnesota due to fireworks injuries More than 30% of fireworks injuries are from sparklers Nearly 45% of fireworks injuries each year happen to children According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 19,000 reported fires are started by fireworks each year in the U.S. Safety Tips To help residents stay safe, the Plymouth Fire Department shares some important tips and reminders: Only use Minnesota-legal fireworks like sparklers, fountains, ground spinners and snappers Fireworks that explode or shoot into the air are illegal in Minnesota Residents may not use fireworks on public property such as roads, schools or parks Use in an open area with a bucket of water or garden hose near by Never point fireworks at people or animals Never allow children to play with fireworks Glow sticks serve as a good alternative to sparklers Attend a professional firework display instead of using fireworks at home Be Respectful The Public Safety Department asks that those celebrating with fireworks be considerate of their neighborhoods. Shooting off fireworks can be extremely frustrating for neighbors, especially when homes are close together, people are trying to sleep or pets are frightened.
