Under general supervision, the Grounds-Irrigation Technician performs irrigation installation and maintenance by following planned designs and maintenance schedules for campus grounds in all assigned areas. This individual is responsible for all general maintenance and upkeep of advanced irrigation controllers, schedules and irrigated areas throughout campus. In addition, Grounds-Irrigation Tech will participate in mowing lawns, trimming and pruning trees and bushes, and detailing landscape elements and flowerbeds when required. This position comes into regular contact with co-workers and supervisors along with occasional and casual contact with visitors, students, staff members, faculty, etc. while performing the duties of the job. The Grounds-Irrigation Tech will maintain all activities related to irrigation, including establishing, programming and maintaining irrigation schedules on computer; installing, maintaining and repairing all components related to irrigation systems; and maintaining accurate records of water usage to maximize water efficiency. Successful incumbent will develop and maintain maps of irrigation systems; dig trenches or holes for sprinklers, landscape lighting, etc.; treat foliage, trees and shrubs for insects and weeds; plant flowers, shrubs, trees, seeds and bulbs; and collect debris and trash from campus grounds. The Grounds-Irrigation Tech must have the ability to operate tractors and trenchers; read and comprehend blue prints; program and maintain advanced irrigation controllers; recognize common species of shrubs, trees and flowers grown in subtropical regions of Florida; conduct catch-can field audits; perform strenuous physical work for sustained periods of time; learn and comply all safety rules; and work in extreme variations in temperature and humidity. This individual must have knowledge of occupational health and safety precautions applicable to grounds keeping. This position requires knowledge of general mechanical maintenance, underground lawn sprinkler systems, time clocks, two wire systems, electrical wiring and trade-service support. This technician must communicate effectively orally and in writing. This Tech must be skilled math sufficient to calculate flow rates, pipe sizing, friction losses, run times, systems efficiency, spacing and proper irrigation head selection. Position is subject to “on-call” responsibilities, and as business necessitates, may work on weekends, holidays and in emergency situations. Must have the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions; and ability to lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques. Minimum Qualifications: • High School Diploma or equivalent. • Three years’ commercial level experience irrigation maintenance, repair and installation. • Experienced in the care and maintenance of Florida landscapes and landscape construction. • A valid Florida Driver’s License Preferred • Skilled in the proper methods used in planting and maintaining hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers in the subtropical regions of Florida preferred.
