Woman Charged In Fatal Hit-Run Death Of 13-Year-Old Boy: CMPD

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 35-year-old woman has been charged for her involvement in a fatal hit-and-run collision early Sunday morning that killed a 13-year-old boy, Charlotte police said Tuesday. Tamika Powell was charged with felony hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Kevin Gaviel Osorto. The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near the 4000 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim and learned the driver had fled the scene. According to a preliminary investigation, Osorto was walking along the right shoulder of the southbound side of East W. T. Harris Boulevard when he was struck, CMPD said. "Debris from the collision aided detectives in identifying the suspect vehicle as a 2016 or 2017 Chevrolet Equinox," CMPD said following the incident. "Although the color of the actual suspect vehicle is not yet known, detectives indicate the front, right headlight will be damaged." On Monday around 8 a.m., a CMPD officer spotted a black SUV with similar damages parked in a gravel driveway in the 6000 block of The Plaza. CMPD investigators obtained warrants for Powell who was then arrested and transported to the law enforcement center for questioning. She was later transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, where she was charged. CMPD said an investigation into the collision remains active and ongoing and asked anyone who witnessed the incident call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
