TUSCALOOSA, AL — In a Tuesday full of big headlines for Tuscaloosa's legislative delegation in Montgomery, state Rep. Bill Poole, a Republican from Tuscaloosa, announced his candidacy to be the next speaker for the Alabama House of Representatives. His announcement comes after Republican House Speaker Mac McCutcheon, who represents parts of Limestone and Madison counties, announced he would not seek re-election when his term expires in November 2022. It also comes on the heels of State Rep. Rodney Sullivan, a fellow Republican from Northport, announcing on Tuesday he also would not run for another term in the statehouse. In a statement to media on Tuesday, Poole said "If the members of the State House of Representatives choose to elect me as Speaker, I will pledge to lead the House with determination, dedication, honesty and transparency as we work together to secure better paying jobs, improved education outcomes, improved health care, expanded broadband access, and more investments in innovation and technology." An attorney by trade, Poole was first elected to represent House District 63 in 2010, when Robert Bentley opted to leave the Legislature to pursue what would become a successful gubernatorial bid. In his committee assignments, Poole chairs both the Tuscaloosa County Legislation Committee and the Ways and Means (Education) Committee.
