I need to rehome our 11 week old brindlequin male Dane puppy - he’s honestly such an incredible dog for a puppy…doing very well with potty training (1-2 accidents a week, if that) and I’m almost confident enough to say he’s crate trained. He initially cried/barked in there for up to 45 minutes, but now goes in willingly (with the hopes of getting a treat) and hasn’t cried in several days. He will occasionally whimper or bark once when I leave the room but that seems to be it. The crate is in my bedroom for now and he does go in peacefully at night and will sleep most of the night through. If I put him to bed at 10:00-10:30, he typically won’t wake me until about 5 or 6am. During the day I’m comfortable crating him for 2-3 hours at a time.
He’s eating well, can self entertain, is very sweet, and honestly a joy to watch play.
So what’s the issue? My oldest dog has just recovered from cancer and she is not taking to the new puppy well at all. I’ve never experienced anything like this with her but should have more carefully considered how she’d feel about adjusting to this big change. She’s always loved puppies so I figured she’d be excited. Typically I would give this much more time, but she’s not eating at all and drinking very little, so I spend every minute worrying about whether she will be alright. My vet and I discussed that maybe rehoming him is the best option. This is a difficult decision because having a Dane as a pal has been my dream, but it will have to wait.
I would strongly prefer he go to a home with Dane experience, or at least extensive knowledge regarding bloat, elevated feeders, growth rate/protein % in food, etc.
He is up to date on shots and due again in July. Feel free to contact me for pictures or with any questions. He is not free and I am in no major rush to rehome him - I have the dogs separated for now and will continue this until he finds a loving, Dane-appropriate home.
