Hi folks, my name is Joel Laviolette and my website is at https://joellaviolette.com I am an expert on the Zimbabwean instrument called mbira (in the pic). I’ve played it for 28 years and I spent years living in Zimbabwe playing with my teachers. I’m a professional musician and I lead several groups here in Austin including Rattletree (two-time Auatin Music Award “best world music” winner), Kupira Marimba, and others. Since moving to Austin in 2006 I have played well over 1000 shows including ACL, SXSW, and most of the local and regional festivals. I also run (currently still closed) the Rattletree School of Marimba where I teach adults how to play this music. I’m starting a new electric band project that will focus on the Zimbabwean sounds.
