Join us for a bilingual family tour exploring the historical context of the Morris-Jumel Mansion's architecture, site, and former residents. Bilingual Mansion and Garden Orientation (en Español) The Morris Jumel Mansion dates back to 1765 when it was first built as a summer home for British Colonel Roger Morris, his wife, Mary Philipse, and their family. Throughout the years, many great leaders have stepped foot inside the Morris-Jumel Mansion including Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Henry Knox and George Washington himself. Learn more about the history of the house, its architecture, garden, and grounds in this 30 minute outdoor overview. After this 30 minute orientation, the remainder of the tour will be self guided and take place inside the mansion. MJM educator Jessica Colon will introduce visitors to the exciting history and beautiful grounds surrounding Morris-Jumel Mansion. One purchase should be made for each household, which is defined as a group who lives together in the same home or apartment. This tour is held rain or shine, but in case of cold, inclement weather the tour may be cancelled. Please be prepared with rain gear, if needed, as limited shelter is available during the first 30-minutes of the tour. The Morris -Jumel Mansion is a historic house museum that seeks to preserve and interpret Manhattan’s oldest residence, one that has witnessed the evolution of northern Manhattan from rural countryside to a dynamic multicultural community. Through historic site tours and education programs, the museum interprets the mansion in the context of domestic life in New York City, the influx of European immigrants to Washington Heights, the City Beautiful movement at the turn of the century, the life of the Jumel Terrace Historic District, and more. Morris-Jumel Mansion seeks to serve as a cultural resource for an audience of national and international visitors and, in particular, the diverse audiences of the City of New York.
