Description

It's been over a year since District Attorney Chesa Boudin took office. How's it all going and what's his vision for the future? Manny's welcomes back District Attorney Chesa Boudin to discuss the last year, the well publicized recall effort, and the future of criminal justice here in San Francisco. Boudin has faced strong backlash to his progressive criminal justice policies since taking office in January 2020. A year and half later, what progress has been made towards a more equitable justice system? What has it been like to be the District Attorney during a global pandemic? How does District Attorney Boudin feel about his time in office so far and what's his vision for the next few years? Has there actually been a rise in crime? If there has been a rise what can we do about it? The structure of this event will be about 45 minutes of discussion with DA Boudin following by small break out groups where YOU can meet some new folks and discuss what you just heard. We hope to help solicit a more collaborative discussion and hear the diverse stories in our city. Manny's never turns away anyone for lack of funds. To receive a complementary ticket just email the word "grapefruit" to [email protected]. This event will be in person at Manny's but there will also be a Zoom link ticket for those who'd like to tune in digitally from the comfort of their home. About Chesa Boudin: Chesa Boudin is the recently elected District Attorney of San Francisco. Personally impacted by parental incarceration and the failings of the criminal justice system, DA Boudin was inspired to become a public defender, and now, decarceral prosecutor. He is focused on reforming the criminal justice system and making our communities safer by developing data-driven policies to expand alternatives to incarceration and treat the root causes of crime. In his first few months in office, DA Boudin ended the office's practice of asking for cash bail, eliminated status enhancements, implemented California's first diversion program for primary caregivers, and ended the prosecution of charges resulting from racist pre-textual traffic stops. He has also implemented numerous police reforms, started an innovative Economic Crimes Against Workers Unit to protect workers from exploitation, and has succeeded in reducing the jail population in San Francisco even as crime rates declined. He remains committed to additional reforms that promote justice and protect public safety.
