NEWTON, MA — In an effort to help encourage people across the commonwealth to get out and have a few adventures now that we've turned a corner with the pandemic, Newton's Highland Street Foundation has put together a calendar of free activities for August. August Adventures, modeled after Highland Street's long-standing Free Fun Fridays program, has the goal of providing opportunities for people across the state. The foundation is supporting museums, zoos, nature sanctuaries, or other events so they can be offered with no admission fee. "This is our collective way of saying 'welcome back' to the community," said Highland Street Executive Director Blake Jordan. "Like many industries, arts, cultural and recreational venues were hit hard by the pandemic, and we hope they can bounce back quickly as things begin to normalize." The August Adventures program offers opportunities throughout the Commonwealth, from Greater Boston to Cape Cod, and out to Central and Western Massachusetts. "August Adventures is a fantastic way for the New Bedford Whaling Museum to connect deeply with our community and share our new Creature Features program," New Bedford Whaling Museum President Amanda McMullen said in a statement. "We are grateful to the Highland Street Foundation for recognizing an important need for families and children, and making it possible for the Whaling Museum to open our doors for free on August 9th." Some venues have capacity limitations and require advance registration. Tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis. Highland Street Foundation was founded in 1989 "to address the most pressing needs and concerns for children in families" across Massachusetts through access and opportunity in education, housing, mentorship, healthcare, the environment and the arts, according to the organization's website www.highlandstreet.org
