PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY — "Taps" was played on a bugle as the colleagues of Correction Officer Candice Ogiejko lined up in their dress uniforms outside St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson Station on Monday to deliver one final salute on Monday.
The 25-year-old was one of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department's newest recruits and had only a little over two years on the job when she was killed last week in a car crash when she lost control of the car she was driving and it went off the road and down an embankment on Sills Road in Yaphank.
Sheriff Toulon said his department's "entire staff" is mourning her loss.
"Correction Officer Ogiejko was just 25 years old and had her entire life and career ahead of her," he said. "She will be greatly missed by her loving family, as well as her extended family in law enforcement."
She was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
