Description

CAMBRIDGE, MA — As of July 1, 2021, the utility bill postponement put in place by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during the COVID-19 pandemic will end. Customers who have an overdue balance on their natural gas or electric account may have their services disconnected after July 1. Eversource should have also sent out a notification about this change. Utility customers can prevent a shutoff by paying their balance and taking action. If you are having trouble paying your bill, help is available. Enrolling in an Eversource payment plan can prevent a service disconnection, says the company. All customers, no matter what their income, can enroll in a payment plan to pay a past-due balance over a period of up to 12 months. There are special programs to help those who are low income qualified on the Eversource website. There is also protection available if you have a medical condition and a financial hardship, have a baby under 1, or if everyone in your household is over 65 and a minor lives in the home. The Cambridge Multiservice Center can also help those who need utility and rent assistance resources.
