TACOMA, WA — Monday is on track to be the hottest day ever recorded across Pierce County, as a historic, three-day run of excessive heat reaches its pinnacle. Forecasters predict Tacoma could see temperatures in excess of 110 degrees, dangerously high for residents who are sensitive to heat. Due to increasing fire danger, a red flag warning will be in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, and Western Washington remains under an excessive heat warning until Tuesday night. With a large swath of Puget Sound classified in the "very high risk" category for extreme temperatures, cities across Pierce County have added extra options to cool down and stay safe until the unforgiving heat peaks. If you can't make it out to the cooling centers this weekend, the county is offering a few heat safety tips: Spend time in air-conditioned spaces. If not a cooling center, consider an air-conditioned mall, theater, or another cool public place.Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun.Dress in lightweight clothes.Check on your elderly neighbors or relatives. Encourage them to stay cool and drink lots of water.Limit time spent in direct sun.Do not leave children, pets, or people with limited mobility in parked cars.Stay tuned for emergency updates.
