Press release from Westfield Presbyterian Church: June 29, 2021 Elizabeth, N.J. June 23 rd , 2021—How do you change the world? Do you do it one step at atime, or do you multiply that figure by 40 steps? Beginning on Monday June 28 th and lasting 4days, 40 youth from the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield HSMT program and theiradvisors will join Groundwork staff to work on a series of projects designed to improve theenvironment, urban agriculture, and most importantly, lives of members of NJ's fourth largesturban community. The group will be working at 2 locations. At the Groundwork Elizabeth MicroFarm andEnvironmental Center, located at 740 W. Grand Street, in the rear of the Elmora Branch of theElizabeth Public Library, the team will be constructing a Greenhouse, planting an 'A to Z'flower garden, building compost beds and community garden beds, laying stone and piping tohelp drainage, and installing fencing. At nearby Phil Rizzuto Park on Morris Avenue, named forthe Hall of Fame Yankee shortstop and announcer, the team will be removing invasive plants,helping mulch trails, clearing trash and debris, and helping to firm up an eroding riverbank. The group will arrive Monday morning by 10 a.m. where they will meet Groundwork staff for anorientation on the work to be done. During the next few days, elected officials from the city ofElizabeth including the Mayor, members of City Council and members of the Union CountyBoard of County Commissioners will visit with the youth as they work. The Westfield team willleave the project with a greater understanding of the needs of urban agriculture and conservationand restoration of open spaces.
