HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The Court of Appeals of Maryland has granted an appeal to a lawsuit aiming to limit the voting powers of the student member who sits on the Howard County Board of Education. Two Howard County Public School System parents filed a lawsuit in December 2020 challenging the voting rights of the school board's student member. The lawsuit first was shot down in Howard County Circuit Court. Howard County Public School System parents Traci Spiegel and Kimberly Ford filed the lawsuit after the school board repeatedly tied 4-4 when voting on issues during the 2020-2021 school year, such as allowing students to return to in-person classes during the coronavirus pandemic, The Baltimore Sun reports.
