By CBS San Francisco Staff: SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — United Airlines announced Tuesday it plans to purchase 270 new Boeing and Airbus aircraft, an expansion of its fleet that could add up to 4,000 new jobs at San Francisco International Airport over the next 5 years. The announcement came as the air travel industry was bullishly recovering from more than a year of declines during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the outbreak, San Francisco International was nearly a ghost town as flights were cancelled, workers furloughed or laid off and gates stood empty.
