The first trolley entered the new Tecolote Road Station on Tuesday as the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System began testing the nearly complete Blue Line extension to University City.
The trolley was greeted by political leaders and transit advocates as MTS prepares for the $2.1 billion, 11-mile extension to open to the public later this year.
The Tecolote Road station is the first new station north of Old Town and one of nine constructed for the project.
"This is an exciting day for our region," said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who also chairs the MTS board. "It reminds me of that day as a kid when you get the keys to your new car."
The transit system officially took over the project on Tuesday from the San Diego Association of Governments, which supervised the design and construction.
"Now really begins all of the operational testing and planning as we look ahead to getting this ready for passengers," said Fletcher.
