SMITHTOWN, NY — Yoo-Hoo, a female domestic medium-hair tortie between 10 and 12 years old, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week. She is considered to be super sweet by shelter staff. "She was abandoned as part of a feral cat colony, and almost certainly would not have survived if she didn't receive treatment," the shelter wrote. "She needs a home that will cherish her, and she will reward you with affection day in and day out. Her gorgeous green eyes and outgoing personality will make anyone fall in love with her." Yoo-Hoo has an overactive thyroid, which is common in cats, so she will need a home that can provide her with her prescription diet and take her to the vet twice a year to help control her thyroid levels, according to the shelter. "She gets along well with older children and other low-key pets who respect her space. Yoo-Hoo would fit in well with any family!" the shelter wrote. Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. "If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated. All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.Due to the coronavirus, the Smithtown Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access to confirmed adoption appointments and animal/wildlife rescue. Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only. The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself. The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes.
