Description

The latest research about Gettysburg hero and Maine icon by a celebrated biographer. The renewal of interest in Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was powered by the historical novel Killer Angels (1974), the Ken Burns documentary The Civil War (1990), and the portrayal of Chamberlain by Jeff Daniels in the movie Gettysburg (1993). More recently, a push back has arisen among some who feel Chamberlain had become too big for his Civil War britches--accusing him of exaggerating if not falsifying his accomplishments in speeches and writings after the war. Ron White, returning to Maine to complete his research for a comprehensive biography of Chamberlain to be published by Random House in 2023, will discuss some of the pieces in the Chamberlain puzzle he has found most fascinating. He is eager to hear comments and questions about the Brunswick hero who continues to enthrall a wide audience. Pejepscot History Center is a non-profit, educational organization charged with preserving the collective heritage of Brunswick, Harpswell, and Topsham. The Society owns and operates the Joshua L. Chamberlain House Museum and the Skolfield-Whittier House, both of which are open to the public Memorial Day-Columbus Day. For further information please call the Center at 207.729.6606 or find us at www.pejepscothistorical.org.
