FREE Youth Mountain Biking and Trail Building Program. Meets on Monday-Thursday mornings @10AM-3PM from July 19th - July 22nd. (Cohort 5) This program is open for NYC School district 6 students enrolled in grades 6th - 8th. It combines mountain bike trail stewardship and off-road skills to build a core community of youth cyclists, and trail advocates around the trails at Highbridge park. Trail Stewardship: Students must come with a desire to learn, build, explore, and get dirty! Students will help create and maintain trails and terrain park features through tasks including digging, raking, and grading.Bike Skills Clinics: Students must be able to ride a bicycle, and demonstrate mounting, pedaling, and stopping to enroll in the program. The certified mountain bike instructors will teach students how to navigate challenging trails and terrain on their mountain bikes through skill drills, clinics, and riding on their local trails. For kids who cannot yet ride a bicycle, enroll in a learn to ride program at: https://forms.gle/8RstYCv3Kyeeay2y8The program provides elite-level helmets and ultralight mountain bikes built specifically for kids. Students with perfect attendance will be gifted the helmet to keep.Participants should wear wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes that are appropriate for the weather. We recommend participants bring plenty of water, and a bagged lunch to eat during the 12-12:30 PM lunch break.There are five cohorts. Each meets for FOUR DAYS. Ample street parking adjacent to the park. ***Highbridge Bike Park is located 200' northeast of 131 Ft George ave, 10040*** Via Subway -Take the #1 Train to 181st, and use the elevators to get to street level. Head North on St. Nicholas ave. to 193rd st and keep right onto Ft George ave. Meet at the flagpole adjacent to Ft George Playground. ATTENTION STUDENTS***PLEASE REVIEW THIS COVID-19 SAFETY INFORMATION. Onsite COVID safety protocol will include symptom screening, regular equipment sanitation, mandatory mask/glove wearing, and social distancing each program day. Perform a self-health check at home to see if you may be sick with the coronavirus. If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, please do NOT participate. People who do not show symptoms may still be able to spread COVID-19. A face covering can help prevent you from spreading COVID-19 to other people, so you should wear one whenever you leave home and cannot maintain at least six feet of distance from others. A face covering can include anything that covers your nose and mouth including dust masks, scarves, and bandanas. Do not use healthcare worker masks as those must be preserved for people in the healthcare system. ● Keep at least six feet between you and others and do not touch others. ● Wash your hands often, including at the start and end of your volunteer project. Use soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. ● Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when sneezing or coughing. ● Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. ● Monitor your health more closely than usual for cold or flu symptoms. The New York City Mountain Bike Association (NYCMTB) builds and maintains trails in the five boroughs of New York City, advocates locally and regionally for the sport of mountain biking, and fosters a community of mountain bikers in New York City. We are a volunteer community of dedicated builders and riders who believe that the greatest city in the world needs the greatest urban trail network in the world. We encourage volunteer engagement and a sense of pride and ownership of public lands through our stewardship and programs. Our continued partnerships with local stakeholders, including the NYC Parks Department, local conservancies, and neighborhood volunteers, ensures that all New Yorkers have access to world class bicycle trails in their backyard. NYCMTB Is committed to youth development, and growing a foundation of riders and advocates for the sport throughout the five boroughs. Our free monthly off-road skills clinics, group rides, bike share, and youth MTB programming, ensure the next generation of young riders and racers have the tools they need to progress their skills safely, while promoting fitness and a love of the outdoors.
