Press release from the University at Buffalo - UB Now: CORY NEALON June 28, 2021 COVID-19 UPDATES  •  6/25/2021 From fishing and kayaking to offering scenic backdrops and habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife, Lake LaSalle plays a critical role in life on the North Campus. Unfortunately, it also captures its fair share of windswept trash and debris. To address this problem, a group of volunteers will comb the shoreline from 10 a.m. to noon on July 1 to clean up the lake. "It's a real amenity to have such a large lake on campus," says cleanup organizer David Doermann, who in his day job is director of the UB Artificial Intelligence Institute and a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. "My wife and I routinely walk around it. We see ducks, heron, groundhogs — of course, geese — and other wildlife," he says. "It's a special place that we need to take care of, especially for the animals that live there." All volunteers are welcome to join the effort, says Doermann, who notes that even if people can't go near the water, they can still help the effort. University Facilities will provide trash-picking devices, bags and gloves. Lunch will also be provided. Volunteers will meet in the UB bookstore parking lot. For additional questions, email Doermann at [email protected]. This press release was produced by the University at Buffalo - UB Now. The views expressed here are the author's own.
