San Diego County Reports 106 New COVID Cases As Positive Rate Increases

By Chris Jennewein, Times of San Diego June 27, 2021 The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency reported 106 new cases of coronavirus Saturday and one more death from the pandemic disease. Out of 7,140 test results received in the past day, 1.5% were positive and the 14-day rolling average of positive tests rose to 1%. Daily cases are rising slightly as the pace of vaccination slows, and public health officials urged people to get vaccinated. The county reported that 1,849,440 residents are fully vaccinated — 88% of the goal — and another 326,531 people have received their first dose of vaccine. Officials are concerned that young people are not getting vaccinated fast enough, especially with the appearance of the new "Delta" variant of the virus, which is blamed for rampant infections in India and parts of the United Kingdom. "The more people who get vaccinated, the better chance we have at ending this pandemic locally," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. On Friday the county announced it will phase out some vaccination sites due to a significant drop in demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Since the pandemic began there have been 282,262 cases in San Diego County and 3,780 deaths for a case fatality rate of 1.3% from the disease.
