MANHATTAN BEACH, CA —The Fourth of July holiday is just around the corner, and Manhattan Beach City officials want to remind everyone that it is illegal to possess or discharge fireworks of any type. Every year, the City of Manhattan Beach receives reports of increased fireworks activity around the independence day holiday, officials said in a released statement. The manufacturing, possession, storage, sale, use, handling, and discharge of fireworks, including those defined as "safe and sane" fireworks, is a misdemeanor, subject to fines, and will be liable for the expense of fighting a fire or expenses incurred during an incident. As we approach the holiday, many will be making plans to celebrate this important day in our nation's history. The Manhattan Beach Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to inform the public that we work continuously to ensure the safety of our community. The discharge of 'Safe and Sane' fireworks is permitted only in communities where they are sold. The community is encouraged to contact those communities for their guidelines. "However, Manhattan Beach does not permit the sale or discharge of fireworks," the Fire Department said.
