COLUMBUS, OH — There is a critical, concerning need for blood donations in Ohio, according to the State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire and Transportation Services. "There is great concern that some patients may not be able to receive life-saving infusions of blood and blood products despite current efforts to conserve these resources," said Ohio Division of EMS Executive Director Rob Wagoner. "As we move through these summer months, the seasonal increase of trauma patients will further stress this critical shortage." The blood shortage has likely been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ohio EMS said. The threat of the virus has led to fewer blood donations and increased usage of blood and blood products to treat a rising number of trauma cases. Those interested in donating blood can contact any blood collection agency in their area to learn of the specific blood donation process and requirements established.
