CHARLOTTE, NC — A female officer working at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center was injured and had to be hospitalized after she was attacked by an inmate wielding a homemade weapon late last week, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said Monday.
An investigation into the attack is underway, according to the sheriff's office.
The incident occurred Friday night shortly before 9 p.m. when the officer was conducting a medication pass, MCSO said in a statement. The officer was cut with a homemade weapon and bitten by an inmate identified as James Holmes, 42.
The officer was transported to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of injuries that the sheriff's office said were non-life threatening and minor. She was released from the hospital to continue care at home, MCSO said.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement that he was at the hospital when the officer was released and that she was in good spirits.
"As Sheriff, the safety of our detention professionals and residents is always a concern," McFaddn said. "The MCSO Investigative Unit will thoroughly investigate the incident to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed."
